Deconstructing the Japanese Photobook

Project Abstract

The photo book has been an important mode of dissemination for photographers since the 1960s. Deconstructing the Japanese Photo book focused on two areas of inquiry: the book as a mode of artistic expression and the use of this book to create discourse. To ground this practice research, I revisited historical counterparts, situations, and circumstances, and in-process reflected on historical and contemporary approaches used in photo book design while allowing moments to identify geographic and time-based trends and self-reflection.
