Crafting Connections: Unveiling the Role of Words and Images in Museum Experiences through Communication Design

How can communication design strategies influence the perception and interpretation in a museum context?

Project Abstract

Born and raised in Vietnam, I remember growing up and seeing my mother work for Thang Long Imperial Citadel, one of the most important and best-preserved parts of the ancient Imperial Citadel in Hanoi. At the same time, my father always took and encouraged me and my brother to visit every museum in every place we travelled to.This project is a culmination of that passion, my research centred around this key question: “How can communication design shape visitor engagement and interpretation in Hanoi museums?” To guide my research, I explored three key sub-questions: First, How can museums in Hanoi find new audiences? Second, What can we do to enhance visitor interaction with museums? And finally, What is the role of words and images in Vietnamese museums? Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is, as its name suggests, bordered by the Red and Black Rivers. Hanoi’s museums are not only preservers of history, but they also serve as gateways to understanding the city’s rich heritage. The "Between Rivers" map focuses on the heart of Hanoi, specifically the Ba Đình and Hoàn Kiếm districts, the cultural heart of the city. The map showcases seven museums and five attractions, each museum with its representative monument. This map is not only practical but also designed to spark curiosity and encourage people to visit museums they may not have considered before.
