Words of an Occupation

For this typographic exploration, I was inspired by Issa Al-Assaad’s lecture, “Decolonizing Architecture”, of the Designing with(in) the Mess event. Issa proposed a modular solution to refugee shelters housing the forcibly displaced people of the Levant. Taking that idea of modularity and displacement, I first developed a digital, abstracted typeface inspired by traditional Palestinian embroidery. It features letterforms with a single stitch that is out of the cluster, a symbolic interpretation of refugees existing outside of society. Next came the physical embroidery. The series present words that describe the emotional and physical state of the refugees and the colour choice is consistent with that of traditional embroidery.
